Judge Dr. Jovan Ćirić (1960-2022)

Jovan Ćirić was born in 1960 in Belgrade, where he graduated from the Faculty of Law, Belgrade University. In 1985, he started working at the Institute of Criminological and Social Research, where he participated in several research projects, and in 1990 earned his master’s degree from the Faculty of Law, Belgrade University, on the topic: “The Criminal Offence of Medical Malpractice”. He earned his doctor’s degree in 2000, on the topic: “Extralegal Factors Influencing Judge’s Penal Decisions”. In the same year, he started working at the Institute of Comparative Law. In 2007, he became the director of this institute, and in 2009 he was awarded the highest scientific title – science advisor. In 2016, the Institute of Comparative Law, which he headed at the time, was awarded “The Medal of Sretenje” by the President of the Republic of Serbia. Up to now, he has published seven books - monographs, and almost 200 scholarly papers – articles. He was a member of the Ethical Committee of the Clinical Centre of Serbia, and editor of the journal “Foreign Legal Life”. In 2009, he was a member of the Commission for amending the Criminal Law of Serbia. He was on several occasions a member of the Commission for Master’s and Doctor’s Degrees at the Faculty of Law in Belgrade. In the period 2014-2016, he was also a member of the Commission for acquiring science titles with the Ministry of Science, and in 2013, the Serbian Association for Criminal Legal Theory and Practice presented him with the annual achievement award. He mentors postgraduate students at the “UNION” Faculty of Law. He was appointed Judge of the Constitutional Court in December 2016.
Judge Jovan Ćirić died suddenly on December 12, 2022.
